| Troop Committee The Troop Committee is made up of all troop leaders and parents. Monthly committee meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month during the scouting year. The Troop Committee Chairman oversees the committe, whose main purpose is to divide the various responsibilites in administering the troop. These responsibilities include Advancement, Transportation, Fundraising, Ceremonies, Programs, Under First Class Advancement, etc. Please contact Jon Caspar with any questions. Troop Committee Meetings: First Sunday of each month (September through June, holidays allowing), 7:00 - 8:30 PM, in the Silverside Church library. Committee meetings are open. Troop leaders are expected to attend. Parents are welcome at any time. Volunteer Opportunities 2007-2008 Driver Sign-Ups 2007-2008 Troop Committee & Volunteer List/Sign-Ups Under First Class Advancement List/Sign-Ups Driving & Camping Drivers are needed for troop activities throughout the Scouting year. The greatest need for drivers is on camping weekends. Drivers are necessary to transport Scouts and gear to and from camps. Without enough drivers, we run the risk of having to limit the number of participants on these weekends. Furthermore, drivers are encouraged to stay and participate with the troop for the entire camping weekend. A Driver Sign-Up list is circulated every spring for the following year's camping activities. This allows parents to sign-up in advance and to schedule around the troop's camping activities. Please contact the Troop Committee Chairman or Transportation Chair to volunteer Drivers are also occasionally needed for other activities, such as taking Scouts shopping during troop meetings. Please let the Transportation Chair Darlene Bailey know if you're available for other driving needs. Advancement Scouts working toward the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class are constantly working on various advancement requirements at meetings and on camping trips. These requirements include skills in areas such as first aid, swimming, hiking, orienteering, cooking, camping, and pioneering. The troop is always looking for parents to help coordinate and teach these skills to our younger Scouts. In many cases, an older Scout will be able to assist in this instruction. Please contact the troop's Under First Class Advancement chair to volunteer. Merit Badge Counselors Throughout the Scouting year, older Scouts are offered several opportunities to earn merit badges through recurreing merit badge clinics scheduled during the regular troop meetings. In most cases these are badges required to earn Eagle. A Merit Badge Counselor must have some knowledge of the content of the badge he or she will be instructing. Parents are especially encouraged to sign up as counselors for badges which directly relate to their professions or interests. Merit Badge Counselors are generally needed for several consecutive troop meetings, enough to cover the requirements of the badge. Follow up meetings are possible for badges which call for periods of observation, record keeping, etc. Adult Leader Recognition In addition to the Boy Scout Leader Award (and other similar progress awards, such as the Webelos Den Leader Award) here are a few other ways to recognize adult leaders: Adult Veteran Award Recognizes registered tenure beginning at five years.
